A balanced 14-day route covering Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guilin and Shanghai, with high-speed rail times, sample days and where to splurge.
Why this route works
Two weeks is the sweet spot for a first visit to China. You see the imperial north, the ancient capital, panda country, classic karst landscapes and the modern east coast, without ever feeling rushed. The whole route runs on high-speed rail and one short flight, so logistics stay simple.
Day 1-4: Beijing
Land, jetlag day at the Temple of Heaven and a relaxed hutong dinner. Day 2 the Forbidden City and Jingshan Park. Day 3 the Great Wall at Mutianyu, with the toboggan back down. Day 4 the Summer Palace in the morning and 798 Art District in the afternoon, finishing with Peking duck.
Day 5: High-speed rail Beijing to Xian
Four and a half hours on the G train, comfortable second-class seats. Arrive Xian in the late afternoon, dinner of biang biang noodles and lamb skewers in the Muslim Quarter.
Day 6-7: Xian
Day 6 the Terracotta Warriors, joining a small-group tour for context, plus the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in the afternoon. Day 7 bicycle the Ming city walls at sunrise, calligraphy or dumpling cooking class, optional evening Tang Dynasty show.
Day 8: High-speed rail Xian to Chengdu
Three hours on the G train. Arrive in time for Sichuan hotpot.
Day 9-10: Chengdu
Day 9 the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base in the morning, when the pandas are most active, then People Park for tea and the old Wide and Narrow Alleys. Day 10 a day trip to Leshan Giant Buddha and Mount Emei, or a Sichuan cooking class.
Day 11: Fly Chengdu to Guilin
The only flight on this itinerary. Two hours.
Day 12-13: Guilin and Yangshuo
Day 12 the Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo, four hours through the iconic karst landscape. Stay in Yangshuo. Day 13 bicycle through rice paddies along the Yulong River, optional bamboo raft.
Day 14: High-speed rail to Shanghai
Long travel day (around 10 hours including connections via Guangzhou). Arrive Shanghai in the evening, dinner on the Bund.
Day 15-16: Shanghai
Day 15 Yu Garden, the old French Concession and rooftop drinks. Day 16 a half day in Suzhou (30 minutes by rail) for the classical gardens, back to Shanghai for your evening flight home.
Where to splurge
One private guide day in Beijing or Xian is worth the cost. Spend more on hotels in Yangshuo and Suzhou where the boutique options are genuinely special. The high-speed trains are an experience, second class is plenty.
What to skip on a first trip
Tibet, Xinjiang and Yunnan all deserve dedicated trips of a week or more. Hong Kong and Macau pair better with a southern China trip including Guangzhou. Save them for trip number two.
